If we’re going to perform, let’s be live. Really live. Charismatic and present with ourselves, with each other, with our audience.
A performer’s first job is to turn up. I mean really turn up – body, mind, imagination, desire, will, joyousness….everything. The total performer, present in the room with others.
Only then can we start to communicate.
This weekend workshop will introduce the fundamentals of training and performing physical ensemble. It will combine structured and semi-structured training exercises with solo, duet, trio and group improvisation. Each morning the group will encounter ‘Self-With-Others’ – an approach to training physical ensemble that John Britton has been developing for nearly twenty years. Each afternoon we will focus on developing skills in improvisation-as-performance; both solo work and in ensemble.
The work is rigorous, passionate and based in a total commitment to a performer’s pleasure. At its heart is a quest for liveness, charisma, presence, connectedness and expressive daring – those indefinable qualities that make live performance such a thrilling experience – for performer and for audience.
The weekend will be led by John Britton, Artistic Director of DUENDE. John has been teaching, performing, writing, directing for nearly thirty years. His work crosses the boundaries of dance, theatre, improvisation, music, circus. He has an extensive practice as teacher, director and performer, including work in recent months in India, Mexico, Australia, America, Sweden, Germany, Greece, France and the UK.
