Hospitalfield Arts – inviting partnerships – study visits and residential group stays

Hospitalfield Arts is keen to build new partnerships with educational, cultural and research institutions and networks in line with our refreshed approach to programming and commitment to opening up our site as an active, enjoyable, working and learning environment.

We invite bookings for research retreats, development weekends, network meetings and academic group longer residential periods.

Hospitalfield Arts is a contemporary art organisation set within an extraordinary heritage environment with connections to artists and writers spanning several centuries. Hospitalfield House, in its beautiful location overlooking the North Sea in Arbroath, is the house of artist and collector Patrick Allan-Fraser and his wife Elizabeth Fraser. The couple were visionary in the way in which they ran and developed the estate and supported artists through collecting their work. Allan-Fraser bought or commissioned works by artists that were part of his network and he worked closely with crafts people of Angus to create the extraordinary early arts and crafts interiors within the house.

This 19th century work built on existing ties with Sir Walter Scott’s image of Hospitalfield as ‘Monks Barns’ within his novel The Antiquary and an inherited collection from the artist Francis Place.

The house, collections and estate were left in trust in 1890 and established, in-line with the Allan-Fraser’s bequest, as a residential art college. The constitution change in the 1920s and the house was run as a post-graduate college for much of the 20th century.
