SPACE AND WORDS FOR DANCERS, OPEN SPACE DISCUSSION DAY :: WHAT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED OF THE DANCER AND POET TO PRODUCE POETRY AND DANCE IN PERFORMANCE?
Sunday 19 July, 10am – 5pm :: £15
Chisenhale Dance Space, London, E3
OPEN SPACE DISCUSSION DAY:
Please see and circulate the invitation (below) to participate in this Open Space Discussion Day, hosted by the Transdisciplinary Improvisation Network (TIN) in the School of Media and Performing Arts, Middlesex University and Chisenhale Dance Space. Participants are also invited to propose contributions to a special edition of the journal: Choreographic Practices, edited by Prof. Vida Midgelow and published by Intellect.
Using Open Space Technology (OST), the Open Space Discussion Day hopes to gather artists and scholars who work in dance, theatre, literature and related disciplines to discuss what skills are required of dancers and poets in performance. As context, this event follows a 6-day workshop (Monday – Saturday) for advanced dancers (applications currently invited) taught by JULYEN HAMILTON (SPAIN) and BILLIE HANNE(BELGIUM), investigating the specific areas of space and words:-
‘In space resounds what emanates from us as we make dance and words. Space is a central area of obsession in the dancer’s work and concerns both geometrical and emotional powers as a language of sensitivity and communication’ (Hamilton).

‘When a dancer produces words and movement he engages the powers of the space and of his actual body. It is suggested to think about voice and text in a three-dimensional way to allow the dancing body to be a dynamic place where words take form in the dancers physicality’ (Hanne).

It also follows performances by Hamilton and Hanne (Thursday eve) and an Evening Talk with Julyen and Billie (Friday eve) to which participants are encouraged to attend.
The wider Space and Words for Dancers project hopes to initiate, over the months that follow, a range of outcomes  – performance, images, video, words, poems, articles, chapters – across a range of registers. As well as submissions to the Choreographic Practices journal, artefacts will be curated and collated on the spaceandwordsfordancers website. (Further calls and details for these will follow at a later date).
PERFORMANCES:
PLAY is the latest solo from Julyen Hamilton. It faces the art of improvisation head-on. It listens to and provides the stream of poetry which is characteristic of Hamilton’s work over the past decades.
Deep Brown Sea is a new solo performance by The Wheel/Billie Hanne. In ‘Deep Brown Sea’ the world is simple and enormous. It is a giant vessel that is largely empty and every move and word echo for years.
Thursday 16 July, 7pm :: £15
EVENING TALK:

Join Julyen Hamilton and Billie Hanne as they talk in-depth about their work and the making of poetry and dance. A unique chance to listen and talk and ask questions directly about the practice of performing text and dance.

Friday 17 July, 7pm :: Free (booking essential)
