Marie-Gabrielle Rotie in conversation with Sabine Sörgel

This is the first in a series of dance theatre dialogues at the University of Surrey to interrogate the long standing relationship between dance and theatre. In her new book Dance and the Body in Western Theatre 1948 to the Present Sabine Sörgel (University of Surrey) poses the question what we might learn by considering the moving body as our source of knowledge and subjectivity at the heart of twentieth century theatre performances following the devastation of the twentieth century’s two world wars and global political change thereafter. Marie-Gabrielle Rotie (Goldsmiths University London) is a dancer and choreographer with a background in Butoh – a dance theatre form which itself arose from the trauma of twentieth century modernization and the effects of World War Two in Japan. Her interdisciplinary aesthetics focus on the body in relation to identity, desire and death. In conversation the two will raise common concerns over performance research at the intersection of dance, theatre, embodiment and history.
