‘Questioning the Contemporary in 21st Century British Dance Practices’

Leeds is the UK’s no. 1 city for dance outside of London with a renowned dance infrastructure that is deeply embedded into the BA Dance programme at Leeds Metropolitan University. This one day symposium aims to bring together scholars, practitioners and postgraduate students from within the dance sector to embrace and encourage debates across, between and within international and industry informed dance research and practical enquiry. We are inviting proposals that address and invite new discourses around current cultural trends, landscapes and practices in contemporary dance and choreography as we move forwards into the 21st century and that relate to the overall themes below:
• Contemporaneity and British dance practices
• Collaboration and Interdisciplinarity
• Choreographic practices
• The opening up of process and implications for dance-making and audience engagement
• Critical discourses of performance practice
• Investigations into how we deal with identity in current dance practice and performance
• Immersive and participatory practice
• Pedagogical practices
• Training for future practice
We encourage the submission of proposals for individual papers, curated Panels and practical presentations .of practice as or practice-led research.
Please submit abstracts of no more than 250 words by midday on 28th April 2014 to Laura.Griffiths@leedsmet.ac.uk. Applicants will be notified on Friday 2nd May 2014.
Leeds Metropolitan University are keen for emerging scholars, postgraduate students and practitioners to participate in this event and offering a number of bursaries as below:
2 x £500 bursaries for emerging scholars, postgraduate students and or practitioners to conduct or develop a piece of research over a two week period leading up to this event from 7- July 2014. Space at Yorkshire Dance will be provided as part of a two week choreographic programme whereby you will be able to interact with other practitioners and develop your research and to inform a presentation to be delivered at the symposium on Friday 18th July. If you are interested in this opportunity please submit a 500 word expression of interest outlining your requirements in terms of space, time and possibility of working with dancers from institutions in Leeds.

A limited number of bursaries of £20 towards travel for research students enrolled in full or part-time postgraduate study are available. Please indicate in your application if you would like to be considered for a bursary.
