CfP: Instigating, creating and responding 3rd July 2015, University of Northampton

Conveners: Matthew Gough and Kelly Preece, University of Northampton

Keynote Speakers: Scott deLahunta, Senior Research Fellow at Coventry University and Vida Midgelow, Professor of Dance at Middlesex University

DanceUoN and Playgrounds Dance Company welcome proposals for ‘Instigating, creating and responding’ a one-day conference examining the complex interactions between devising dancers and choreographers. This event recognises the need to reassess the assumptions that have emerged around the concept of the devising dancer by unpicking the intention that lies within the choreographic process. Without an understanding of this intention, it is difficult to know what the dancer is instigating, creating or responding to. We invite researchers and practitioners to contribute papers, panels or peformative presentations that engage reflexively with choreographic processes and practice in contemporary dance, improvisation, dance theatre and screendance.

Proposals may engage with, but are not limited to, questions surrounding:

  • democracy
  • hierarchy
  • responsibility
  • artistic integrity
  • ownership
  • authorship
  • agency
  • performativity
  • embodiment
  • documentation
  • archiving
  • pedagogy

This one-conference reflects the ongoing artistic practice and critical discussion of choreography at the University of Northampton as part of the BA (Hons) Dance and Playgrounds Dance Company.

Format for submissions: paper presentations are limited to 20 minutes. Proposals panels or performative presentations will be dealt with individually. Proposals should include: Names of presenters, Biography (max 100 words), Title and type of submission (paper, panel etc.), 300 word abstract.

The deadline for submission of proposals is 1st June 2015. Proposals should be emailed to: kelly.preece@northampton.ac.uk
